    The Labyrinth of Solitude is a book-length series of essays on the subject of Mexican identity and culture, written by famous Mexican poet Octavio Paz in Paz was one of the most, if not the most influential Mexican poet of the 20th century, and the book explores the complexities of Mexican history and culture in nine distinct chapters. This enlarged edition of The Labyrinth of Solitude contains the new texts that complete the book and bring it up to date. These include The Other Mexico which, written in response to the government massacre of three hundred students in the plaza of Tlatelolco in Mexico City, is at once a postscript and a revision of The Labyrinth of Solitude.

      Labyrinth was given to me by our Church book club. I shuddered at the size of the book, but I was soon engrossed in the story. I have not finished the book yet, but it is one of the most interesting, exciting and beautifully written books I have read for a long time.
